Bichon Frise

Dear Animal Loving Friends,
In today’s blog, we the staff at ForPetLovers.com, would like to discuss some of the characteristics of the Bichon Frise.
The Bichon Frise descended from the Water Spaniel and the Standard Poodle. The word “Bichon” is a French word meaning “small long-haired dog”. Bichons were divided into four categories: The Bichon Maltese, the Bichon Bolognaise, the Bichon Havanese, and the Bichon Tenerife. All these Bichon types originated from the Mediterranean area. Because Bichon Frises have a merry, cheerful disposition, they traveled a lot, and were used as a barter by sailors in the Mediterranean Sea. Thus, Bichons became enjoyable favorites of the French, Spanish, and the Italian nobles. Many years later, in 1955 the Bichon Frise was brought to the United States.
The Bichon Frise is a small dog that stands 9-12 inches in height, and weights between 10-20 pounds. The Bichon’s head is slightly rounded, and their muzzle is not pointy. The dog breed has a black nose, with dark round eyes, and white dense curly hair. Bichon Frises can have medium to high intelligence, are a gentle mannered, sensitive, playful, and an affectionate dog breed. They love human company, and do well with children because they are playful and have lots of energy. Finally, Bichon Frises are bred to be hypoallergenic, meaning they don’t shed their hair or dander, and thus can be suitable for people with allergies.
Bichon Frises have a life span of about 12-13 years, but are susceptible to a few diseases. While about 23% of Bichon Frises die of old age, 22% die of cancer, 14% die of hematologic, and 11% of AIHD/ITP (Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia/Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia). Bichons are also prone to liver shunts, leading to liver failure, if detected early, the shunt often can be corrected with surgery. Google for more details.
